development

Development started in September 2001 and took around one and a half years to complete. The cost was about 1 to 1.5 million US dollars .

The game was released as freeware on September 1, 2006 by S2 Games . In 2007 the source code became available to the gaming community, which continues to develop it to this day.

Gameplay

Savage combines first person shooters and strategy games . The gameplay, reminiscent of Natural Selection , looks like this:

Two teams compete against each other on the Internet or locally . Each team has a commander who does not see the game from the first person or pursuer's perspective like the rest of the players (in the following: FPS playerfirst-person shooter ) , but rather follows the game from a bird's eye view , similar to Warcraft . The aim of the game is to take out the opposing team by destroying their headquarters.

The commander has the task of directing his team, mining resources, erecting defenses and buildings and conducting research. He can either use computer-controlled workers to mine the raw materials and build buildings or call on other players (it is up to the player whether he wants to obey or not).

The teams can choose from two races: Humans or Beasts . This choice affects the tech tree and the selectable weapons and items, as well as the available units. There are combat, siege and healer units; with different advantages and disadvantages depending on the breed. So like a human Ballista Although more damage than a Summoner (Summoner), the comparable unit of Beasts , but it has only a limited amount of ammunition.

Depending on the weapon you see the game world in first-person or third-person perspective , d. H. with long-range weapons from the first person perspective and with melee weapons from the outside view.

Combat system

Savage's combat system is asymmetrical. In addition to attacking with a melee weapon, both races have an additional ability; the humans a defensive: the block (mini-stun), the beasts an offensive: the jump. While jumping and attacking can be used as a beast at the same time, as a human being you can either hit or block. The close combat is controlled manually, with full mouse movement.

It was on the basis of this minimalist concept that the evolution of martial arts began in Savage. Beast players soon noticed the possibility of bypassing blocks by flanking their opponents with a jump and ramming their claws into their unprotected back with a 180-degree turn of the mouse. Was still mainly the melee extension in early days Carnivorous used which is proportional to the damage done Health regenerates ( Engl. Lifesteal), increasingly won Rabid popularity, the zugutekam the now improved fighting technique, as it successful with every hit the stamina ( Engl. Stamina) strengthens and thus allows the beast to jump on more and more opponents and kill them. In later patches, a Duel mode was added to Savage, which enabled players to compete in close combat, devise and refine new combat techniques.

Engine

Savage uses a 3D engine specifically produced for the game called Silverback . The reason for this is obvious - it must be able to adapt flexibly to the innovative game principle. So both the commander and the FPS player must be able to see the same thing from different perspectives.

To represent the will 3D library OpenGL used, the development on the two platforms significantly easier (compared to DirectX - Engines ).

Of particular note is its small footprint: The manufacturer as a minimum requirement, a CPU with 600 MHz , 128 MB RAM and a GeForce - or Radeon - graphics card on; this is also confirmed by practical tests.

Official mods and expansions for Savage: The Battle for Newerth

  • Samurai Wars - transports the player to the times of the samurai .
  • SFE (Savage Full Enhancement) is more of a patch created by fans than a mod. Among other things, there are new maps and game modes as well as z. B. Weather effects.
  • Savage XR is a complete overhaul of Savage SEP / SFE, but leaves the game mechanics largely unchanged. Savage XR was released as version 1.0 on the 10th anniversary of Savage: The Battle for Newerth (September 9, 2013). XR caught on with the community and at the end of 2015 is the only version of the Savage series that is still played online. The development of XR began in August 2007, when it became more and more apparent that S2 Games with Savage 2 no longer follow a fundamentally asymmetrical game principle (identical combat system and meta-gameplay for both races), the usefulness and selection of ranged weapons, the complexity of the economic system and degrade the real-time strategy player to a field tactician. XR, preserving the unique dynamics of close combat and the complexity and diversity of Savage, offers significantly better graphics based on normal mapping , day and night, ray-traced rain, particle effects and over 600 new and redesigned trees, rocks and modular building blocks for bridges, tunnels and houses. Other innovations are the automatic game and map update, tutorials, a duel learning mode (with Python AI bots that simulate the fighting techniques of veteran players), replays, widescreen support, 4 new game interfaces, a new physics engine, and much improved modding -Support (including 3D Studio Max plugin), an anti-cheat system, integrated game statistics, integrated clan / tournament management as well as e-mail system, voice-over-IP, a completely redesigned map editor, the integration of various mods like Samurai Wars, Elementary, Extreme Mod, Savage Evolution and much more.

Savage 2 - A Tortured Soul is the sequel to Savage: The Battle for Newerth . It follows the same pure multiplayer system as its predecessor.

The first beta version of Savage 2 was originally scheduled to be released on July 31, 2006, but was then postponed indefinitely. The closed beta only started on October 8, 2007 and was opened to all pre-orderers on December 22, 2007. The game and the demo version of the game were released on January 16, 2008.

Like its predecessor, Savage 2 is sold online because, according to S2 Games, the price would otherwise have to rise to at least $ 50 by the marketer. A Collectors Edition has also been available since January 15, 2008, which includes the game on CD, 5 persistent items and a printed strategy guide comprising 48 pages. This can only be purchased in addition to the actual game and costs $ 15. Like its predecessor, the game is now offered as a free download on the website.

The game has been available for download free of charge since December 9, 2008. Optionally, you can purchase a premium membership for a one-time fee. In this way you buy yourself a number of advantages that are hardly relevant in terms of play:

  1. 6 instead of 4 inventory spaces
  2. Unlimited play as Hellbourne
  3. Player statistics
  4. Downloading and viewing game recordings (replays)
