The savannah rail ( Crex egregia ), syn. Ortygometra egregia, Crecopsis egregia, Porzana egregia , also called steppe rail or steppe moorhen , belongs to the genus of the corncrake ( Crex ) within the family of the rail (Rallidae ).

features

The savannah rail is 20-23 cm tall and 121-141 g in weight, the wingspan is 40-42 cm. The females are a bit smaller. The top is speckled brown, the head with narrow stripes over the eyes, the ear covers, chest and legs are gray, the flanks and stomach are cross-striated in black and white. The greenish-gray beak has an orange-red base. The young bird is paler with less noticeable stripes over the eyes, the beak, ear-covers and throat are brown.

distribution and habitat

The savannah rail occurs south of the Sahara preferentially in moist or swampy grasslands from sea level up to 2000 m.

nutrition

It feeds on earthworms , mollusks , insects and larvae of termites, ants, beetles and grasshoppers as well as frogs .

Reproduction

Hatching takes place during the rainy season, in Senegal in July, in Sierra Leone between June and August, in Ghana in April, in Nigeria between July and September, and in southern Tanzania between October and May.

Hazardous situation

The savannah rail is not considered to be endangered ( least concern ).
