Sayapuram was founded in 1815 by a group of Christian converts. The town is named after Samuel Sawyer, a British East India Company merchant who donated funds to the settlers to purchase the land they needed. The name Sayapuram is a corruption of Sawyerpuram, Tamil for "Sawyer City". In 1842 the Anglican missionary GU Pope reached Sayapuram and established a mission station for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts and a seminary here. In 1850 Pope left Sayapuram again. The seminary, meanwhile, developed into a college associated with the University of Madras . Bishop Robert Caldwell moved that to Tuticorin (Thoothukudi). As a replacement, Sayapuram received a middle school , which in 1930 became a high school . Today there are still several educational institutions in Sayapuram that remind of the legacy of GU Pope: the Pope's College, the Dr. GU Pope College of Engineering, the Dr. GU Pope College of Education and the Pope Memorial Higher Secondary School. In Sayapuram the first experiences with “ Medical Evangelism ” were gained. The first clinic was built in 1854, from which St. Raphael's Hospital developed. After the famine of 1877–1879, the clinic played an important role in providing medical care for the population.

Today Sayapuram is a city panchayat administered according to the Panchayat system . According to the 2011 census, the city has 12,792 inhabitants. 71 percent of the population are Hindus and 29 percent are Christians. As in the whole of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil , which according to the 2001 census is spoken by 99 percent of the population as their mother tongue.
