Scévole de Sainte-Marthe

Scévole de Sainte-Marthe (born February 2, 1536 in Loudun ; † March 29, 1623 ibid) was a French writer who published works in French and New Latin .

life and work

Gaucher (II.), Known as Scévole (I.) de Sainte-Marthe, was the chief financial administrator in the province of Poitou and mayor of Poitiers . He worked as a writer in Latin and French for 60 years. Jean Brunel and Pierre Martin are currently editing his collected works (including translation of the Latin texts) in six volumes (5 volumes published, 2010–2016). Famous is his Paedotrophia of 1584, a treatise on infant care in Latin verse, written by his grandson Abel de Sainte-Marthe (1626–1706) under the title La Manière de nourrir les enfans à la mammelle (“How babies should be breastfed or: Infant hygiene ”; Paris 1698) was translated into French. His poem J'ai passé mon printemps, mon été, mon automne is one of the classics of French poetry .
