Interior of Scalloway Castle

Scalloway Castle is the ruin of a tower house in the Scottish village of Scalloway on the Shetland island of Mainland . In 1971 Scalloway Castle was included in the Scottish Monuments List in the highest category A. It is also classified as a Scheduled Monument .

history

Scalloway Castle was built between 1600 and 1607 for Patrick Stewart, 2nd Earl of Orkney , a grandson of Jacob V. It was to replace his old mansion in Sumburgh . For the construction was Andrew Crawford committed, who is also among other Muness Castle on Unst built, which is why both structures are similar. Stewart ruled the archipelago like a king and was unpopular with the population. In 1615, just a few years after Scalloway Castle was completed, he was incarcerated in Edinburgh and died. After Stewart's death, the island administration was housed in Scalloway Castle. It also served at times as accommodation for Oliver Cromwell's troops. With the move of the Shetland capital to Lerwick , Scalloway Castle was abandoned. The stones from the outbuildings were reused and the main building was given to the state in 1908. There are no more traces of the outer buildings on the surface today. However, based on archaeological data, foundations north of the Tower House could be located.

description

The ruin is on a headland at the southeast end of Scalloway across from the harbor. It has an L-shaped floor plan and is still partially preserved up to the full height of four floors. In contrast, the roof and the intermediate floors have collapsed. The masonry is made of rubble stone, while the windows are framed by sandstone blocks from Eday Island , which were also used as corner stones on the edges of the building. The building corners are with bay towers with ornate corbels reinforced. Below the ruins is a vault that once housed the cellar and kitchen.
