Scalloway ( Old Norse : Skálavágr ; Hanseatic : Schaldewage ) is a place on the island of Mainland , part of the Shetland Islands , as well as a community council area in the southern part of the Civil parish Tingwall . Scalloway is the second largest city in the Shetland Islands. It was the capital of the Shetlands until 1708 when it was replaced by Lerwick as the island capital. Scalloway has 1159 inhabitants and represents around 10% of the island's population of Mainland. The biggest attraction is Scalloway Castle . It was built around 1600 by Earl Patrick Stewart. It is considered a typical example of Scottish fortifications.
Scalloway Museum
The Shetlands played an important role in supporting the Norwegian resistance during World War II . From the beginning of 1942, Scalloway was the "headquarters" of the resistance movement and the destination of the " Shetland Bus " escape route . The museum offers a look back into the history of this movement.
