Tingwall is a civil parish on the Shetland island of Mainland . The center is 3.5 km north of Scalloway and 6.5 km west of Lerwick , where Tingwall Airport is located . The Civil parish Tingwall includes the places Veensgarth , Gott and also the former island capital Scalloway in the southern part, the inhabited island Trondra and the formerly inhabited islands Hildasay , Langa , Linga and Oxna . In 1891 Civil parishes were incorporated into Whiteness in the west and Weisdale in the north. Until 1701, the original area of ​​Lerwick (excluding the later extensions of 1891: Burra (islands in the southwest), Gulberwick and Quarff, which were separate parishes) belonged to the Parish Tingwall.

The old thing site for central mainland was on the Law Ting Holm peninsula in Tingwall Loch . It was the seat of the Nordic administration over the Shetland Islands.

In the cemetery of the simple St. Magnus Church, built between 1788 and 1790, an inconspicuous building from the end of the 18th century, there are some graves of country nobles. One of them could be identified at the beginning of the 20th century as the rest of the choir of the previous church from the 11th century, which was provided with a round tower. A gravestone commemorates Andrew Crawford, the architect of the Earl's Palace in Kirkwall , Orkney . He died during the construction of Scalloway Castle in 1600.

The west of Mainland is rich in prehistoric sites. Barrows and remains of old chapels can be found in the community and many stone axes and flint arrowheads have been found.
