The Shepherd Beech is a copper beech in the municipality Dobbin-Linstow the district of Rostock . With a trunk circumference of over eight meters and a height of 23 m, it is one of the largest known beeches in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The remarkable and special landmark in the Feldmark was designated as a natural monument in 1987 by a resolution of the Güstrow district council .
history
The polyclonal tree originally consists of three cores. Its age is estimated to be around 300 years. It is unclear whether it is planting in clusters or natural growth. In the crippled bark, overgrown browsing damage from wild or farm animals is visible. In the herding forest , domestic animals were driven under such trees to feed them their fruits. The beech is attacked by the fire crust fungus , which causes mold rot and increases the risk of breakage. Although a strong branch has broken out, the tree shows good vitality. The beech was left to its own devices. In order to avoid the danger zone, the Berlin – Copenhagen cycle route was relocated.
The name of the tree is said to be due to the fact that shepherds and flocks sought protection under the spreading crown.
