description

Location of the lake in the hollow

The Schönenbodensee is located in the east of the village Wildhaus in the municipality Wildhaus-Alt St. Johann in a hollow in a protected flat moor area at the southern foot of the Gulmen. Like the Schwendisee on the opposite side of the village, the lake was formed around 14,000 years ago after a glacier melted. In the following millennia, the silting up of the lake shores gradually created the moors.

The lake is fed on the one hand by a small stream that flows into the lake on the east side, on the other hand, meltwater and rainwater mostly penetrate underground through the limestone layers of the Gulmen into the lake. As a result, the moor water is constantly refreshed.

The small brook Simmi leaves the Schönenbodensee in the west, turns to the east and flows east of Gams into the Werdenberg inland canal.

You can swim in the Schönenbodensee: there has been a supervised bathing establishment with a jetty, refreshment facilities and pedal rental since 1930 . The production costs were 50,000 francs.

fauna

Carp, brown trout, pikeperch, tench, rudd and numerous amphibians such as frogs live in the Schönenbodensee. The brown trout are the only fish species that are harvested every year.
