The Schwendiseen are located in the upper Toggenburg south of Wildhaus and Unterwasser in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen . The border between the two former communities Wildhaus and Alt St. Johann ran through the lakes.

description

The two Schwendi lakes are located between Gamserrugg and Chäserrugg in a hollow in a protected flat moor area of national importance. When the Schwendi Glacier melted around 14,000 years ago, it left behind the hollow in which the lakes were dammed. In the following millennia, the silting up of the lake shores gradually created the moors.

You can swim freely in the larger Schwendisee; there is a jetty and a raft. Driving on the lake with any type of watercraft is prohibited. The smaller, rear Schwendisee is separated from the front by a strip of forest. Both lakes are surrounded by a dense belt of swamps and reeds and are connected by a watercourse.

The lakes are each fed by a nameless stream, and the drainage is underground. Tench , perch , pike and leech live in the lake . Fishing is allowed for a fee.

The Kulturhotel Seegüetli is located north of the front Schwendisee. A fireplace is available on the east and west banks.

Sound world

Around the lake a promenade and the Toggenburg leads Klangweg , a component of the sound world Toggenburg . In June 2019, the voters of the canton of St. Gallen approved a loan of CHF 22.3 million for the construction of a sound house. According to a design by the Zurich architects Meili / Peter, a building made of local wood with excellent acoustics is to be created, which is to be available to musicians and associations from the region for performances and courses.
