The student ID is an identification document to certify student status. Student ID cards are usually valid for one school year and must then be extended. Whether the student ID card is only valid in conjunction with official photo IDs or on its own is handled differently in different municipalities and federal states. Student ID cards always contain a photo of the student.

In addition to the full name, date of birth and place of residence , the ID card also includes the period of validity as well as a photo and your own signature . In addition, in some municipalities the student ID must be shown on public transport together with the student ticket .

Newer student ID cards are sometimes issued in the form of a chip card. Whether it is an official document is controversial.
