The South Württemberg Student Research Center (SFZ) is an institution in the Swabian town of Bad Saulgau that promotes talented and interested students . It offers schoolchildren between Lake Constance and Stuttgart the opportunity to carry out their own research projects and present their results in national and international competitions. The founder and head of the SFZ is Rudolf Lehn, Director of Studies.

Emergence

The student research center emerged from the physics group of the Störck-Gymnasium in Bad Saulgau. Under the guidance of Rudolf Lehn and Peter Breitfeld, interested students calculated selected exercises in preparation for the selection competition for the International Physics Olympiad . Numerous students returned successfully from the competitions, so that even then the project could be considered a success. With the addition of the International Young Physicists' Tournament, research moved further into focus. The seventeen experimental and theoretical tasks set annually were worked on together and presented by a team of five.

As a result of the large number of visitors, the premises of the Störck-Gymnasium soon became too cramped for the SFZ, so that research was relocated to its own premises in October 2003. The SFZ has also changed structurally, so that it is now financed by a sponsoring association.

The SFZ now has other locations in Eningen unter Achalm , Friedrichshafen , Ochsenhausen , Tuttlingen , Überlingen , Ulm and Wangen im Allgäu .

Research areas

The spectrum of research areas at the SFZ is broad and is not limited to physics . Rather, the students also work on projects in the fields of mathematics , computer science , chemistry , biology , technology and geology . In addition to the small projects on which one to three students work independently, there are large projects that many students work on over several years. Examples are the construction of a wind tunnel and an atomic force microscope .

Everyday research

Everyday research in the SFZ has little in common with school. The students work independently on projects. On request, they can get help from various teachers, as well as through numerous contacts with universities (e.g. Ulm University ) and companies from industry. The activities usually take place outside of class hours, mainly from Friday afternoon to Sunday.

Competitions and Achievements

For years the student research center has participated in numerous national and international competitions. The most important include the International Young Physicists' Tournament, the International Conference of Young Scientists, the International Physics Olympiad, the Federal Computer Science Competition , the International Chemistry Olympiad , the International Biology Olympiad and Youth Research .

  • Multiple victories at the International Young Physicists' Tournament and numerous second and third places
  • High placements at the International Conference of Young Scientists (numerous first prizes)
  • High placements at the International Physics Olympiad (up to gold medals)
  • Numerous regional and state victories at Jugend forscht as well as two national and European victories
