A Schapenboet ( German  sheep barn ) is a special type of barn that occurs on the Dutch island of Texel .

architecture

The buildings are characterized by their characteristic shape of the roof. In contrast to most roofs, the roof does not consist of two ( gable roof ) or four ( tent roof ) surfaces. The three sides of the roof face north, west and south in order to best withstand the westerly wind. The roofs are covered differently. Some have a tile roof , some have a thatched roof , and some have a combination of both. The size varies depending on the version, but is broadly similar. In some designs, the roof ridge is not built parallel to the ground, but rather rising from west to east. Many buildings were erected in the 19th century.

use

In order to facilitate the cultivation of agricultural areas that were a little further away from the farmers' home, the farmers on Texel built the small additional barns. The Schapenboeten serve the farmers as a barn and garage at the same time, for storing hay and sheltering tools. The east side of the building serves as protection for sheep from wind and weather. Today, of the 50 or so Schapenboets on Texel, only a few are still used for their original purpose. Many farmers let their buildings fall into disrepair. However, some of the barns are listed and are in good condition and are partly maintained with public funds.

A Schapenboet is open to the public. It is located near the town of Den Hoorn and is free to visit 53 ° 1 '42.6 "  N , 4 ° 44' 35.3"  O .
