The Schalksburg , also Schalkerburg , is an abandoned hilltop castle on the west side of the Oderwald about 160 m above sea level. NN on a rising eastward terrain. It is a large rampart with an irregular diameter of 100 to 120 meters, which is east of the town of Groß Flöthe near Wolfenbüttel in Lower Saxony .
Castle complex
The castle complex has an outer moat and earth wall. These are cut by four earth bridges, so that no statements can be made about the original entrance. 150 years ago, traces of masonry could still be seen inside and the fountain was in the middle of the complex. There are several assumptions about the founding time, such as that Charlemagne had it built in 780 or that it was a Schwedenschanze . The author Schultz describes it as a refuge and refuge castle , a ring wall system . It is considered to be the best preserved ring wall in the Braunschweiger Land . The good state of preservation is based on the location in a forest area.
Regarding the origin of the word, it is assumed that it can be a modification of a place or stream name Schabeke. Schalk also means squire . But since the second name is Schalkerburg, Schultz rules this out.
