A formwork is a transportable, mobile shuttering unit for the production of reinforced concrete - components which have a constant profile over long distances. These are, for example, inner shells and walls in tunnels or long running girders in bridges .

With formwork components are in sliding type prepared similar to the construction of high tower-like structures employed slipforms : In both the concrete component is produced in a continuous system. The construction process - consisting of reinforcement , shells and concreting with in-situ concrete - is repeated after a short time at the next position.

The components made of in-situ concrete made with formwork carriages are opposed by the same made of precast concrete parts (e.g. from segments ).

Formwork carriages can be designed for reprofiling, sealing, reinforcement and concrete work. When building tunnels, there are very long units (so-called worms) in which trains can pass through at the same time. For example, 600 m long formwork carriages were used in the construction of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland.
