Schammasch is a Swiss band from Basel , which is essentially assigned to Black Metal . The name is derived from the Babylonian sun god Schamasch or Šamaš . The musicians themselves want to stay in the background as far as possible and only give their initials.

history

The band Schammasch was founded in 2009 as a trio "from the remnants of the previous band Totenwinter", according to initiator CSR. The vacant position on bass was filled with a live musician. The debut album Sic Lvceat Lvx was released in late 2010 via Black Tower Productions . Four years later, the second album Contradiction was released by Prosthetic Records , which two years later also wrote the third album Triangle . It had a playing time of 100 minutes, led to a European tour through 16 countries and gave the band a nomination for the Basler Pop-Preis , which in the end was awarded to Zeal & Ardor . However, Schammasch received the audience award. Contrary to the original plan of not wanting to perform the album live in its entirety due to the third part, the band agreed to a request from the Roadburn Festival . In 2017 the EP The Maldoror Chants: Hermaphrodite followed , which refers to "Les Chants de Maldoror" by the French poet Lautréamont . The fourth album Hearts of No Light was released on November 8, 2019 . The album was able to place in various categories on the US Billboard charts.

style

At the time of the debut album, the band played "accomplished Black / Death Metal somewhere in the intersection between the newer Behemoth and Secrets of the Moon in 'Carved ...' and 'Antithesis' times". With the successor works, the style became more experimental and united the "intersection of all dark musical styles" combined with "traditional, spiritual as well as ethnic music". Elsewhere it was said of the third studio album Triangle that Schammasch played "Post Metal", which was made up of the "black components of Black Metal, Ambient, Doom, Avant and Death Metal".
