Shame

Schammes in Bielsko-Biała , Poland, 1926
A shammes ( Hebrew שׁמשׁ shammásch 'servant') is a synagogue servant. It fulfills the lowest function in a synagogue .
Therefore, the term is sometimes used disparagingly as "errand boy". His duties correspond to those of the sexton .
The term “Schammes” or “Schamasch” is also used for the candle that is used to light the other candles of Hanukkah .
The Schammes is not always clearly conceptually separated from the Gabbai , sometimes the terms are used identically.
