The Schanz tunnel is an 860 m long railway tunnel near Fichtenberg in the Schwäbisch Hall district . It crosses under the Schanz pass and, as part of the Murrbahn, connects the upper Murrtal and the Fornsbach stop with Fichtenberg and the Rot valley .

The tunnel has two lanes, but the railway line is only a single track. The track is in the middle of the tunnel.

history

After the Hochdorfer and Weinsberg tunnels, the Schanztunnel was the third longest tunnel in the KWSt.E.

During the Second World War , the SS intended to blow up the Schanz tunnel. The project, which was about to be carried out, was prevented by the courageous intervention of the Gaildorf mayor, who feared an economic decoupling of his region.

In 1995 the contact wire was laid and the line electrified.

Need for renovation

Due to the anhydrite present inside the mountain in the gypsum keuper ( Grabfeld formation ), the clay rock swells when water enters, causing the tunnel floor to rise. Therefore, a total of four meters (as of 2006) of earth ( measured vertically ) had to be removed repeatedly .

Due to the ailing condition and the need for renovation, DB Netz AG plans to completely renew the tunnel in 2030. Both a renovation of the existing building and a completely new building are considered.
