Scharfenstein was the name of an old noble family in Thuringia .

history

The Scharfenstein were an old noble family in Eichsfeld and can be traced back to the 14th century in western and central Thuringia. Their ancestral seat was Scharfenstein Castle in Obereichsfeld, after which they were named and which belonged to the ranks of the Counts of Gleichen . It is not certain whether he was assigned to the local castle in a document from the Naumburg bishop Udo named Godehardus in 1161. In the 13th century, some members of the von Scharfenstein family were mentioned in writing in Eichsfeld.

After the Counts of Gleichen sold Scharfenstein Castle to Archbishop Gerhard II of Eppstein from Mainz in 1294 , the von Scharfenstein presumably also left the castle. From the 14th to the 17th century, members of the von Scharfenstein can be traced in the Erfurt, Gotha and Werra area. They were wealthy in Hochheim, Schwabhausen , Goldbach , the city of Erfurt and other places, in Goldbach they had their hereditary funeral. In 1692, Hans von Scharfenstein, the noble family, died out, but in 1730 a female family member was mentioned again with Sophia Elisabeth von Scharfenstein. After his death, the property fell to the Duke of Gotha, and after a long time the ducal chamber property was called the "Scharfensteinische".

The following representatives are mentioned in documents in connection with Scharfenstein Castle (it is possible that representatives of other noble families also named themselves after Scharfenstein Castle):

  • Brothers von Scharfenstein (1221) (in a document from Archbishop Siegfried II of Mainz for the Beuren Abbey)
  • Nikolaus von Scharphenstein (1287), Burgmann
  • Otto and Friedrich (1294), brothers, Otto 1253 as Vogt

Representatives in Thuringia were:

  • Heinrich in Schwabhausen in 1366
  • Kersten (1386) to Schwabhausen
  • Anna (1404), abbess in the Kreuzkloster Gotha
  • Caspar (1429) in Ballenstedt
  • Heinrich, Johann and Kersten (1463), Counts of the same feudal people in Goldbach
