The Schattenmühle is a former water mill in the Wutach Gorge , between Göschweiler and Bonndorf . It is named for the deep, "shady" location in the gorge. The first reliable evidence of the mill dates from 1596, in which a "miller from Göschweiler" is mentioned.

history

In 1596 a "Müller von Göschweiler" was mentioned for the first time in a document. In 1614 Andreas Huber, Müller zu Göschweiler sold his mill in the shadow mill to Thebas (Mathäus) Werni. In 1829 the Neustadt district office approved the construction of a gypsum mill. In 1886 the shadow miller was allowed to extend the underwater canal of his grinding mill and then to build a sawmill on it. In 1939, the shadow mill asked for a permit under water law to install a turbine in the sawmill instead of the dilapidated water wheel . Ten years later, another request was made for water law approval for the construction of a turbine, this time for the dilapidated undershot water wheel of the grain mill.

Today the Schattenmühle is no longer in operation and is run as an inn by the Frei family . Separate from this is the Frey family's farm , to which the sawmill belongs, where sawing was carried out until Max Frey's death. The sawmill's turbine is still used today to generate electricity , as is a photovoltaic system on the roof of the stable belonging to the farm.

In the night of October 4th to 5th, 2007, the main building of the Schattenmühle, which was used as an inn and hotel, burned out completely despite the large-scale deployment of various fire departments. The farm and the stable remained undamaged. According to the police, the cause of the fire was a technical defect in the distribution box. In the course of the follow-up fighting of the fire, a large part of the fire ruin was torn down, as - according to the fire brigade - the fire nests contained therein would otherwise not have been brought under control.

The plans for the (not true to original) reconstruction of the building were carried out in an extremely short time. Construction work began just a few months after the destruction. On May 1st, 2008 the restaurant and hotel reopened in the completed new building.

tourism

Many hikers who hike through the Wutach Gorge, z. For example, on the Black Forest crossing from Freiburg to Lake Constance or the Schluchtensteig , pass the Schattenmühle and take advantage of the offers of the inn and the farm. The mill became a popular destination.
