Schealtiël

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Old Testament, Schealtiël is the son of Jehoiachins , a king of Judah and the father of Zerubbabel .

etymology

The name Schealtiël ( Hebrew שְׁאַלְתִּיאֵל schə'alti'el ) is a sentence name. The first part שְׁאַלְתִּי schə'alti is a 1st person Sg.Pas . of the verb ša'al , which means “to ask / ask”. The second part, the noun אֵל el "God", is to be understood as the object of the verb. The name translates as “I asked God”. A short form of the name is also passed down, which is שַׁלְתִּיאֵל schalti'el (e.g. Hag 1,12  EU ). This was probably caused by contraction. In the Septuagint the name is Σαλαθιηλ Salathiēl , Josephus deviates from it by writing Σαλαθίηλος Salathiēlos

This is the name of the thanks to a mother who remained childless for a long time, who pleaded with God for a son and was finally heard.

biography

According to 1 Chr 3,17  EU, Schealtiël was possibly the son of Jehoiachins, whereby the corresponding Bible verse allows different interpretations according to which Schealtiël could also be a grandson of Jehoiachin. In this case his father would be Assir.

It is also uncertain whether Shealtiel was Zerubbabel's father. Esr 3.2  EU and other passages speak of "Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiël", but in 1 Chr 3.19  EU , Pedaja, the brother of Shealtiël, is named as Zerubbabel's father. So Schealtiël is either father or uncle of Serubbabel.

Schealtiël is listed in the family trees of Jesus in the New Testament in Mt 1.12  EU and Lk 3.27  EU .
