The check choke ( Turdus cardis ) is a songbird from the family of thrushes (Turdidae). It is not one of the endangered species .

description

The dark gray male bird has a yellow beak , a yellow iris ring and light, piebald breast plumage. The female is rather inconspicuous and has brownish plumage, but is also piebald. Compared to the other representatives of the genus Real Thrushes, the piebald thrush is somewhat smaller and reaches a body length of 22 cm.

habitat

In addition to Japan ( Central Honshū ), China , North Korea , South Korea , Laos , Thailand and Vietnam are also part of the distribution area. It lives in dense deciduous forests.

Subspecies

Two subspecies have been described so far, but the International Ornithological Union only recognizes the nominate form :

  • Turdus cardis cardis Temminck , 1831
  • Turdus cardis yessoensis Fushihara , 1959

nutrition

The spotted thrush feeds mainly on fruits and berries, but also on worms and insects .
