A disc watch is a timepiece in which, instead of the hands, a preprinted or punched disc shows the time digitally (with numbers). With regard to the hour display, this form of time display is called the jumping hour (French "Heures Sautantes", English "Jump Hour").

They are mostly wristwatches , more rarely pocket watches. In the high-quality crafted clocks, the hour display jumps jerkily an hour after 60 minutes , when the minute hand reaches "12". Hence the name "jumping hour". However, terms such as "Direct Read", " Digital " are also used; these refer to the way in which the display is read.

The control clocks of the security personnel are also often referred to as disk clocks, since a paper disk is inserted into them.

function

With disc clocks , the time is not indicated by rotating hands on a fixed dial , but by rotating discs. The hour and minute digits are printed on these discs. With the hour disc, however, only the current hour can be seen from the front through an opening. In the case of the minutes, it is usually a smaller area that is visible; the exact minute could then be read in the middle of this display.

history

The first models of these jewelry watches were made in the early thirties, the heyday was mainly the 1970s. Disc clocks are still being made at the moment, but generally of a rather simple quality.

The vast majority of these watches are hand-wound, a few are also made with automatic winding. The calibers have up to 21 rubies; some simple watches only had a pin lever mechanism without rubies.

Manufacturer

Some watch brands that produced disc clocks are (some are just type designations): Luzern, Ingersoll; Osaka; Chalet; Hanova; Handor; Cimier; Cardina; Windert; Gladius; Eloga; Buler; Anchor; Ternindor; Princeton; Mentor; Medana; Sicura; Cupillard Rième.
