Windshield washer fluid or washer fluid is a water-based mixture for cleaning the windshield or the front light units (mainly headlights ) of vehicles using a windscreen washer system . In vehicles with a hatchback or hatchback , it is also used on the rear window.

Windscreen washer fluid has an important function for road safety in a composition adapted to the respective season . Its use prevents, among other things, the formation of a lubricating film in the event of sudden precipitation on dirty windows in the summer months. In winter, anti-freeze additives prevent the windows from icing up. It also enables the vehicle window to be cleaned regularly without the driver having to leave the vehicle. This minimizes dangers such as glare caused by light reflections. In Germany, from 2006 until the amendment to the road traffic regulations in 2013, it was legally stipulated that the windscreen washer fluid must contain antifreeze. Failure to comply resulted in a € 20 fine.

In summer, a special additive developed for this purpose is added, which is optimized for removing insects; in winter, an anti-freeze containing alcohol (e.g. 2-propanol and spirit , which, however, leaves a lubricating film that hinders vision). Detergent should never be added to the windscreen washer fluid. It has only a weak effect on diesel soot and insects, is only really effective at temperatures that normally rarely reach windscreen washer fluid, and can also damage paintwork and plastic parts. Self-mixed windscreen washer fluid for the winter is not worthwhile due to the price disadvantage compared to the ready-made concentrates. In spring, the winter concentrate should be replaced by summer concentrate.

Concentrates or ready-made mixtures are available commercially. The windshield washer fluid is usually pumped to the nozzles under the windshield via a plastic container in the engine compartment using an electrically operated or, in older vehicles, mechanically operated pump or compressed air. This only happens after mechanical actuation of the corresponding switch. It is usually operated using a steering column switch . In some vehicles, operating satellites or switches are also used in addition to the display instrument insert. The distribution is carried out by the wiper actuation, which is mostly automatically triggered at the same time.
