Eponym Giovanni Schiaparelli

Schiaparelli is a more than 450 km large crater on the equator of the planet Mars . It is one of its largest impact craters and is located at Sabarus Sinus between two landscapes that were named Arabia Terra and Noachis Terra in the 19th century .

The crater was around 1970 of US Mars probes mapped and after Mars researchers Giovanni Schiaparelli named (1835-1910), the discoverer of the supposed Mars channels .

Schiaparelli is mentioned in Andy Weir's novel The Martian .
