Location of the lunar crater Schickard on the edge of the moon

The Schickard lunar crater is a large whale plain , close to the southwestern edge of the lunar front . It was named after the German astronomer Wilhelm Schickard .

The mighty, almost circular whale plain is a little south of the Mare Humorum , northeast of the Wargentin crater . Seen from the earth, the whale plain is almost at the edge of the moon, which is why it appears distorted to an ellipse. Its bottom is smooth and partially covered with lava.
