The Schiebel GmbH is a global manufacturer of mine detectors and unmanned aircraft based in Vienna Margareten .

history

The company was founded in 1951 as a manufacturer of small electronic (electronic) parts, such as microswitches for washing machines. From the mid-1980s, Schiebel specialized in the development and production of technologically advanced mine detectors and, not least because of a major order from the American army for over 18,000 mine detectors, became the world market leader. Drones have also been developed and produced since the mid-1990s . The " Camcopter S-100 " is an unmanned flying mini- helicopter that can be equipped with various cameras and various weapon systems. It can be used to monitor borders, pipelines or other ground objects and in 2005 received the Adolf Loos State Prize for Design and the “Mercur” for “Innovation of the Year”.

In 2003 the company had a turnover of around 10 million euros and around 100 employees. In 2004, the construction of a new facility in Wiener Neustadt began, which was funded by the public sector with 1.3 million euros, with the aim of promoting the serial production of the camcorder. The new location was officially put into operation in September 2006. The number of employees increased to 150 in mid-2006, to over 200 in 2008 and was reduced again in the wake of the economic crisis that followed.

In 2008, in addition to the Indian and Pakistani coastguards, the Spanish coastguards also tested the flight characteristics of the drone from ships. The Camcopter S-100 performed take-offs and landings from a small deck. The authorities recognize advantages in the drone for locating shipwrecked persons and in the area of deterrence and surveillance in the fight against piracy, as well as in water and border protection.

In autumn 2008 the German Navy tested the drone's flight characteristics. The camcopter completed around 130 flights in the Baltic Sea. The take-offs and landings took place under harsh conditions (wind speeds of up to 40 knots). The German Ministry of Defense showed interest in using the Camcopter for reconnaissance missions at sea.

After Ukrainian President Poroshenko allowed the OSCE to use drones to monitor the ceasefire in the war in Ukraine on September 12, 2014 , unarmed drones (also) from Schiebel will soon be used in eastern Ukraine to cover larger areas in real time monitor.

Technology Camcopter

According to the manufacturer's statement from July 2016, the camcopter can only be operated with a "dedicated" ground station, communication is encrypted and the key is constantly changed. This means that interference from jamming is not possible. The development takes place in Vienna, the production of the carbon fiber parts and the shell and the assembly of parts from around 300 suppliers, most of which are based in Austria, takes place in the Wiener Neustadt plant. If all parts are in stock, it takes 2 weeks to manufacture a drone. According to their own statements, these are not equipped with weapons and are exclusively exported. (As of December 2015)
