Schielands Hoge Zeedijk
Schielands Hoge Zeedijk is one of the most important dikes in the Netherlands and extends from the Schie to the Gouwe in South Holland . The dike protects around three million inhabitants of South Holland from flooding.
history
Schieland's Hoge Zeedijk was built in the 12th century by order of Aleid van Henegouwen , the daughter of Count Floris IV of Holland .
In its long history, the dike has never broken. However, it was opened in 16 places in 1574 to relieve suffering . On February 1, 1953, during the great storm surge, the dike between Capelle aan den IJssel and Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel almost broke. The leak was closed by entering it with a ship. The memorial on the dike is a reminder of this.
