The Gouwe is a 15 km long canalised river in South Holland, which begins in Alphen aan den Rijn on the Oude Rijn and flows into the Hollandse IJssel in Gouda .
history
In Latin documents from 1139 and 1178 the Gouwe is mentioned as "Golda".
The original headwaters of the Gouwe were a moor west of today's Boskoop . In the 13th century it was connected to the Oude Rijn by a canal , which at that time had long ceased to be the main arm of the Rhine. In the 15th century the Gouwe was canalized and became part of the most important shipping route within Holland, which connected Dordrecht with Haarlem and later with Amsterdam . The Oude Tolhuis (old customs house) at the old port lock in Gouda is a testimony to this time.

The connection to the Oude Rijn has long been attributed to the Gouwe by name.
It is approved for ships up to 90 m in length, 9.5 m in width and 2.8 m in draft. Container ships make up a considerable part of the heavy traffic.
For the drainage association Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland , whose area extends from Amsterdam to Gouda, it is one of the most important drainage routes.
Accordingly, today's mouth of the river is designed one kilometer southwest of the old town of Gouda. It consists of the Stroom Canal with a large pumping station and the Gouwe Canal , which leads through the Julianaschleuse into the Voorhaven .
On the northern outskirts of Gouda, a motorway was passed in a trough under the river, so it now flows over an aqueduct .
