Rail transport in Saudi Arabia

Rail transport in Saudi Arabia is currently taking place on

  • the rail network of the Saudi Railway Organization , the state railway company of Saudi Arabia. It currently operates two routes that take different routes from Riyadh to Hufuf and from there together to Dammam . Several construction projects are to connect the Red Sea and the border region with Jordan to Riyadh.
  • the Mecca Metro , an approximately 18-kilometer-long elevated railway system that opened in November 2010 and is designed for the flow of pilgrims during Hajj .

Are currently planned or under construction

  • The light rail system from Riyadh : With the construction of two light rail lines has started. The first is to be 25 km long and include 23 stops. The second route is 14 km long and has 13 stops. Eight trains have been ordered from CAF and will be delivered by 2012. The initial capacity is to be 1,500 passengers per hour and direction and can be increased to 8,000 if the train sequence is compressed.
  • the Riyadh metro , the completion of which is planned for 2019 and whose trains are to use the approximately 170-kilometer-long route network with six lines fully automatically.

Historically, the southern section of the Hejaz Railway was also located on the territory of today's Saudi Arabia , but has not been used since 1923.
