Port Askaig jetty

The pier ( English Jetty ) from Port Askaig is the dock for ferries in Port Askaig on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located on Islay Sound and forms the end point of the A846 on Islay, which continues on the opposite island of Jura at the jetty in Feolin . Initially, on July 20, 1971, the building was entered as part of an ensemble in Category B of the Scottish List of Monuments . In 2006 this monument ensemble was dissolved and it was recategorized as a single monument in category C.

There are two regularly operated ferry connections from the pier. A car and passenger ferry operated by Caledonian MacBrayne heads for Kennacraig on the Kintyre Peninsula from Port Askaig, alternating with Islay's second ferry port, Port Ellen . The second ferry connects Islay with Feolin on the neighboring island of Jura and offers the only regular transport route for vehicles to Jura.

description

The exact time of construction of the structure is not recorded, so that only the earlier 19th century can be given as the construction period. The pier was built from large stones. Since it has been paved in the meantime, it is no longer in its original condition. At the northern end, the structure is supplemented by a slipway .
