The ship settlements on Als in Denmark were discovered and sketched in 1938 and 1948 by Jens Raben (1880–1960). There are two places on the Augustenfjord on the island of Alsen with three or four more or less complete stone sets in the shape of a ship , as are more common in southern Scandinavia .

Stolbro Næs

The three ship settlements (A – C) ( Danish skibssætningar ) on the northeast bank of the fjord were still so well preserved that most of their dimensions could be determined. The dimensions are:

  • A: length about 17 m; Width about 6.0 m; preserved stones 40
  • B: length about 14 m; Width about 5.0 m; preserved stones 9
  • C: length about 12 m; Width about 4.5 m; preserved stones (probably 10 in 1948)
  • D: From the fourth (D) only four stones have survived.

Ship settlement C was examined in 1960 by Peter Vilhelm Glob , who was able to prove 45 stones based on the footprints. In the ship there was a burn mark about one square meter with about 35 g of burned bones, which could not be determined.

Dyndved beach

On the beach of Dyndved, only about three kilometers southeast of Stolbro Næs, at the end of Katholmvej, at the level of the island Katholm, there are three ship settlements, which Jens Raben reported in 1948 in an article in the "Sønderjydsk Månedsskrift". They are in the immediate vicinity of the beach. Two are badly damaged. The eastern one has only five stones at a length of about 11 m and a width of about 6.0 m. The middle one consists of about 40 stones, is well preserved and is about 13 m long and about 7.5 m wide. The western one consists only of a large stern stone and six other stones.

Viking Age graves were found in the vicinity of the ship's settlements, which were found during gravel mining in the 1920s. At a depth of 0.7 m, the skeleton of a 1.69 m tall man was found without gifts.
