Ship settlement on Gotland

The ship settlements of Bändelenstag are on the edge of the Lau Backar, part of the inland cliff of the Litorina Wall on the Swedish island of Gotland , about 1.5 km north of the church of Lau . The area is the location of two ship settlements ( Swedish skeppssättning ) and a circular grave, which is usually called a stone circle .

The ships of Bändelens Tappo are men's graves and were excavated in 1928 and 1990. The urn of a cremation was found. A pair of tweezers , a razor and a normal knife, all made of bronze, were found among grave goods . The round tomb was looted and contained few burned bones. The artifacts date the graves to around 900 BC. The ships of Bändelens Tappo, which were not built very carefully, lie in a north-south direction, both are about 10 meters long.

During the older Bronze Age (1400 to 1900 BC) it was customary on Gotland to build large stone ships as graves for a select few. There are about 350 on the island made from nearby stone blocks or slabs of limestone . They are often built in groups, sometimes even connected to one another ( rannarve ). The lengths vary from 6 to 47 m ( Gnisvärd ).

About 200 m to the south-west is the raised stone of Mattsarve, which marks a grave. It is 2 m high, 1 m wide and 0.7 m thick.
