history

The Schiffswerft Oberwinter GmbH developed in the decades after the Second World War from a repair shop to a flourishing shipbuilding company. In 1970 it had around 230 employees.

In order to revive the inland shipping, which had almost come to a standstill, the French occupying forces ordered the establishment of a repair shop for war-damaged ships in Oberwinter after the war. This was built from 1947 on the former site of the sports field and lido of Rolandseck and began in July 1948 with repair work.

At the end of 1951 the company took over the slipway of its legal predecessor, the Gesellschaft für Schifffahrt und Handel mbH Mülheim / Ruhr. He could take ships with a length of up to 87 m on land. The former government enterprise of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate was transferred to the private sector on January 1, 1952. The owner was the entrepreneurial group Carl Gilfert & Co. from Mülheim-Ruhr.

Both when working on the ships and when erecting buildings, the shipyard management had to take into account the surroundings, which had already been used for tourism in the pre-war period. For this reason, riveting hammers were not used and electrical welding was used instead. Work was only carried out until Friday so that there was no noise from the shipyard on the weekends. The shipyard area was planted with hedges, bushes and trees, and buildings were inserted inconspicuously into the landscape where possible. The shipyard's buildings also included three residential buildings that were built on the Rheinhöhe as part of social housing.

From 1952 onwards, not only damaged and lifted ships were repaired, but newbuildings were also commissioned. The shipyard's first new ship was the motor ship Charlotte , which was laid down in 1955. The Charlotte was a further development of the Gustav Koenig type . A little later, three heavy-duty ferries for the French occupation forces were added, as well as a motor cargo ship and other orders.

After the heyday for new inland waterway vessels was over, the Oberwinter shipyard shifted back to repairs, including for Cologne-Düsseldorf Rhine shipping, but also to the construction of special ships. From 1964 one also dealt with the construction of seagoing ships; In addition, the construction of ferries and later also of passenger ships was on the program. However, some of the hulls of these vehicles were made in Poland . In 1972 the Oberwinter GmbH shipyard had to file for bankruptcy.

In 1977 the site of the Oberwinter shipyard was taken over by the Schmidt shipyard .
