The island of Amrum is a combined car and passenger ferry operated by the Neue Pellwormer Dampfschiffahrts-GmbH (NPDG). The ship was sold to the new owner by the Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei Föhr-Amrum (WDR) on January 1, 2012 after around 42 years of service on the Föhr - Amrum line .

history

The ship was built in 1970 under construction number 1294 at the Husum shipyard in Husum . The hull was supplied by the Oberwinter shipyard in Oberwinter and built there under construction number S 195.

The keel of the ship was laid on November 13, 1969, the launch on June 5, 1970. The ship, which was christened on June 12 by Käthe Theis, was completed in July 1970. On July 9, 1970, a first test run took place. In 1977, the Elsflether shipyard in Elsfleth added a sun deck to increase the capacity of the ship, especially in the busy summer months.

The island of Amrum was most recently used by the Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei mainly as a temporary replacement for one of the large ferries, for example when the water level was low, or when there was heavy traffic. But it could also be seen in the early morning hours in scheduled traffic, then mainly for the supply of goods to Föhr and Amrum. It was also used to transport dangerous goods . Most of the time the ferry was on the way between Dagebüll and Wyk auf Föhr . Wittdün was rarely called at on the eponymous island of Amrum.

In January 2012 the ship was sold by the WDR to the New Pellwormer Dampfschiffahrtsgesellschaft. From January 8, 2012, the ship was used by the NPDG on the route Strucklahnungshörn ( Nordstrand ) - Pellworm .

The island of Amrum last served as a replacement and reinforcement ferry in the Nordstrand – Pellworm ferry connection. Occasional charter missions on the Föhr-Amrum line were possible. In June 2018 the ferry arrived in Esbjerg , Denmark .

The Danish shipyard Smeedegarden in Esbjerg sold the ship to M. Hjorteseth Shipping AS in Bergen, Norway, where the conversion to a work ship is to take place.

Technical specifications

The ship was initially equipped with two twelve - cylinder four-stroke diesel engines made by MAN (type: V 6 V 16/18 TL), each with an output of 588  kW . After an engine breakdown, one of the two engines was replaced in February 1972 by a twelve-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine made by MTU Friedrichshafen (type: 12 V 362) with an output of 559 kW. The two motors act on two fixed propellers , one of which is at the bow and one at the stern of the ship. The maximum speed of the ferry is 13  knots .
