Jean-Louis Forain (born October 23, 1852 in Reims , † July 11, 1931 in Paris ) was a French painter , graphic artist and caricaturist .

Life

Jean-Louis Forain came from a simple family who moved to Paris around 1860. Forain began his career as a cartoonist for various magazines. He later enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts to study under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux . Forain's work was heavily influenced by Honoré Daumier and his friends, including Claude Monet , Edgar Degas, and Édouard Manet . In 1879 his first exhibition took place in the Salon de Paris , in which Forain participated regularly until 1891. In his later years numerous scenes from the Palace of Justice in Paris and other institutions, as well as social satire of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, emerged . In 1889 he founded the now almost forgotten magazine Le Fifre , of which he was the editor and main illustrator and which only appeared in ten copies.

Forain was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1923 , in the same year president of the philanthropic association République de Montmartre and 1930 honorary member (Hon. RA) of the Royal Academy of Arts in London . He was also Commandeur de la Légion d'Honneur (C. LH).

In 1891, Jean-Louis Forain married the painter and sculptor Jeanne Bosc (1865–1954), and their relationship resulted in a son (* 1895).
