Schijndelaar [ ˈsxɛindəlar ] are the youngest Dutch breed of chicken .

History and recognition

Breeding of the Schijndelaar began in the late 1970s. The aim of the development of the new home breed was, among other things, a green shell coloring of the eggs, making it the only recognized, green egg-laying breed originating in the Netherlands. In contrast to the Araucanas , who are known for their green eggs, the Schijndelaar should have a tail and forelock. The breeders achieved this by crossing Araucanas, Brabantern , Leghorn , Yokohama , Sumatra , Australorps , Dominicans and white-hooded dwarf Dutch crested chickens .

The Schijndelaar were only officially recognized in the white color in 2001 by the Dutch small animal breeding association Kleindier Liefhebbers Nederland (KLN).

Dutch chickens are not yet recognized in Germany. Chocolate brown Schijndelaar were presented at the 117th Lipsia Show, the federal breed poultry show in Leipzig, for the first time in the recognition process of the Association of German Breed Poultry Breeders .

The dwarf Schijndelaar are as numerous other color varieties, previously not recognized in the Dutch nor the German breeding association.
