Schildhof Saltaus

The Schildhof Saltaus is located in Saltaus (municipality of St. Martin in Passeier ) in the South Tyrolean Passeier Valley .

history

The Schildhof dates from the 12th century. This makes it the oldest Schildhof in the Passeier Valley.

During the Tyrolean uprising , the Schildhof served the freedom fighter Andreas Hofer as a hiding place and prison for Bavaria and the French. After Josef Pircher had bought the Saltauser Hof from the then owner, the city of Merano , in 1936 , he renovated the slightly dilapidated building and converted it into a restaurant. Today the Schildhof is part of a 4-star hotel that is still owned by the Pircher family.
