SGK Rolling Chocolate is a wheelchair basketball club from Heidelberg , which is a division of the SG Heidelberg-Kirchheim sports community . The first team played in the 1st Bundesliga in the 2013/2014 season . She is currently participating in the 2nd Bundesliga South (RBBL2S).

history

In 1982, the wheelchair basketball division was founded in 1982 by seven people. In Heidelberg, the number of sports halls suitable for wheelchair users that meet the special requirements in terms of accessibility and hygiene facilities was limited. In order to better implement the special interests, a “wheelchair basketball” department was created in cooperation with the city of Heidelberg and the SG Heidelberg-Kirchheim eV , which is assigned to classic basketball . In this way, integration and recognition of physically handicapped people has already been achieved.

The first season 1983/84 took place in the Association League Baden-Württemberg and could be concluded directly with promotion to the Regionalliga Süd. Several runner-up titles followed. In 1995 he was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga South. After winning various championships, a second and third team could be founded. In 2003 two teams played in the 1st Bundesliga. Due to financial developments and the departure of some players, drastic decisions were implemented. Games in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga were given up voluntarily.

In 2007 the wheelchair basketball players renamed themselves Rolling Chocolate .

A sports cooperation was concluded with the Stephen Hawking School in Neckargemünd to promote young talent . Schoolchildren can take part in training. In this way, new players were integrated into the team, with whom a return to the 1st Bundesliga could be achieved. In 2017, coach Marco Hopp left the club, and Christa Weber was hired as his successor. Under her leadership she won the runner-up in the 2nd Bundesliga South.

With the Rolling Chocolate Heidelberg Talentz , a new youth team has been created that will take part in the newly founded Rookies Series . It is planned to let teams of beginners and weaker players compete against each other.
