The Schiller route is a cycle path that connects Friedrich Schiller's places of work in Mannheim and Ludwigshafen am Rhein .

It was inaugurated as a gift from the city of Ludwigshafen on the 400th anniversary of Mannheim on the 202nd anniversary of Schiller's death on May 9, 2007.

After his escape from Württemberg in September 1782, the poet Friedrich Schiller spent a total of almost two years in the Electoral Palatinate .

Schiller saw the world premiere of his drama The Robbers in Mannheim in 1782 , but lived under the pseudonym “ Dr. Schmidt ”in today's Ludwigshafen district of Oggersheim , as he was afraid of being discovered by Württemberg spies. He lived there with his friend Andreas Streicher under poor conditions in a room in the “ Zum Viehhof ” inn .

Route

The route is 10.9 kilometers long and has its own signage. Information steles about Schiller's stay are set up at a total of 17 stations.

In Mannheim, the Schiller route runs in a loop through the city center, starting from Mannheim Castle. Stops are Mannheim Castle, Schillerplatz, the "Fliegender Holländer" inn, the Schillerhaus Museum, the Zeughaus Museum, the Mannheim Drawing Academy and the Rheintor as well as the palace gardens.

In Ludwigshafen, the Schiller route begins directly on the banks of the Rhine, at the Rheinuferpark, the location of the former "flying bridge" and the Rheinschanze . From here it goes through the city center to the district fountain , via Frankenthaler Straße, the former Oggersheimer Allee to the “Red Cross” in Oggersheim.

In Oggersheim, the first stop is the Josef-Queva-Park , where the central building of the Oggersheim Palace stood in Schiller's time, then to the pilgrimage church and Schillerplatz. The last stop is the Schillerhaus.
