features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moths is 24 to 32 millimeters, with the females moving at the lower limit of size. There are two very different color morphs . The wings of the light morph are white in the basic color and show very clear black or brown markings. The veins in particular are laid out very clearly. The outer transverse line on the front wings shows a distinctive kink in the direction of the hem. The submarginal region is slightly darkened. The dark outer transverse line of the forewings continues on the hind wings, which are also white. The fringes are alternately brown and white piebald. The wing shape, which is characterized by a very pointed apex on the front and rear wings, is typical of the species. The other color morph has a yellowish-brown basic color, is occasionally slightly reddish dust and shows only a very indistinct pattern. In this morph the transverse lines are colored whitish.

Egg, caterpillar

The brownish yellow egg is heavily indented on the side. It is 0.8 millimeters long and 0.5 millimeters wide.

Young caterpillars are yellow-gray to green-gray and have white-yellow back and side stripes, all of which are bordered by dark brown stripes. The nape is light brown and lightly speckled. The pushers are wide. Adult caterpillars are elongated, yellowish-green, indistinct black-brown stripes and show a fine dark line in the light dorsal stripe, next to it a broad gray-green stripe, which is bordered at the bottom by a jagged, sharp, fine dark line. The broad, light side line, which becomes darker towards the belly, is followed by a broad, dark line at the top. All stripes and lines run irregularly and finely jagged.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species occurs very locally in Southeastern and Eastern Europe to the Ukraine . In Hungary and Lower Austria it is represented by the yellow-brown shape. It can be found on warm, poor grass surfaces , but also on moist meadows.

Way of life

Schistostege decussata forms one generation per year whose moths fly in June and July. They are mostly diurnal. The caterpillars live from April to June. The main forage plants are spurge species ( Euphorbia ). Dandelions ( Taraxacum ) are also accepted in breeding . The egg hibernates.

Subspecies

The following subspecies are known:

  • Schistostege decussata decussata
  • Schistostege decussata dinarica
  • Schistostege decussata flavata
  • Schistostege decussata lugubrata
  • Schistostege decussata rumelica

Systematics and taxonomy

The taxonomic position of the yellow-brown form is under discussion. Fajčík calls them Schistostege treitschkei . This name is also used in older literature.
