The Battle of the Arar was a skirmish between the Romans and the Helvetians in June 58 BC. Chr. It ended with a victory Gaius Julius Caesar .

prehistory

Caesar, who was appointed governor of Gallia Narbonensis , claimed in 58 BC. BC that his province was threatened by the Helvetians wandering around Gaul. The two armies finally met on the Arar River, today's Saône .

The battle

The Helvetic warriors fought back, while the civilians of the march tried to flee across the river. Caesar was soon able to defeat the warriors and still capture a good quarter of the fleeing men and women. The battle ended in a victory for the Romans.

consequences

The Battle of Arar was the first major battle of the Gallic War . The Helvetians fought against the Romans in a later battle, the Battle of Bibracte .
