Battle of Coleshill (1150)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Battle of Coleshill was a battle between the forces of Owain Gwynedd , Welsh King of Gwynedd , and the allied forces of Madog ap Maredudd , Welsh King of Powys and Anglo-Norman Earl Ranulph de Gernon of Chester.

Owain Gwynedd had expanded his empire eastwards during the Anarchy in England. He did that in 1140 Cheshire belonging Rhuddlan Castle , 1146 Mold Castle and to 1149 the cantref Tegeingl conquered in northeast Wales. When Owain Gwynedd also occupied Iâl, which belongs to Powys, a fight with the troops of Madog ap Maredudd broke out. Madog ap Maredudd had already supported the Earl of Chester in the Battle of Lincoln in 1141. Faced with the threat from Gwynedd, the Earl of Chester supported the King of Powys with a contingent of his troops.

At Coleshill, west of today's city of Flint , a battle broke out between the two parties in 1150. In the battle, of which no further details are known, Owain won, thus claiming Tegeingl and Iâl. Only after a campaign by King Heinrich II in 1157 could Tegeingl be recaptured for the Anglo-Normans.
