The Battle of Krefeld is a painting by the painter Emil Hünten that hangs in the Kunsthalle Kiel .

background

The Battle of Krefeld is a battle of the Seven Years' War that took place on June 23, 1758 between Allied and French troops and represented a climax of the war from 1756 to 1763 in the Rhineland.

Emil Hünten painted numerous paintings from the time of the Seven Years' War, the Wars of Independence and the Prussian campaigns, later he turned to contemporary battle painting and genre painting.

The paintings

Hünten's painting “Visit of Frederick the Great in Krefeld 1763”, which was burned in the 19th century, can possibly be regarded as a forerunner.

In 1860 he painted the "Battle of Krefeld". In the center of the picture it shows Ferdinand von Braunschweig as Commander-in-Chief of the English and Prussians during his victory over the French in 1758 near Krefeld. After the battle near Katholisch-Hennersdorf (1855), the battle near Reichenbach (1856) and the battle near Zorndorf (1858), it is probably Hünten's last depiction of a scene from the Seven Years' War. Unlike these earlier historical depictions, it shows a depressed mood, in the foreground at the edge of the picture you can see an injured person. It is generally more critical. At 1.6 m in length, it is also significantly larger than other paintings by the artist, for example the Battle of Königgrätz .

The general assembly for the gallery (a kind of plenary meeting of the friends' association) decided in 1864 to purchase this painting. It was hoped that the picture would also increase the number of visitors to the Kunsthalle.
