The village of Großbellhofen is part of the Middle Franconian market of Schnaittach . Until December 31, 1971, it was a separate community with its districts of Kleinbellhofen, Röhrischhof and Weigensdorf. The place has a predominantly rural character and lies at the foot of the "Old Rothenberg", now called Reisberg.

history

The place was in the 13th century Reichsministerialiensitz (Reichsbeamter) on the 507 m high "Rotenberg". The name is reminiscent of the geological formation, the red Great Dane sandstone. In 1301 the wooden castle Rotenberg , built on stone foundations, was destroyed in an act of war. The Lochhof served as a supply.

Around 1285 one reads the first references to the place name: The name Bellhofen (Pelhoven) can probably be interpreted as follows: to the farms of a certain Bello . In ancient times, a distinction was made between Ober-Pellhofen (Großbellhofen) and Unter-Pellhofen (Kleinbellhofen). They were both in the Rothenberg domain as well as Weigensdorf and Röhrischhof. In the Thirty Years War , around 1639, the village burned down eight estates and three still standing and inhabited estates. In 1641 only one imperial private with seven musketeers lived in Großbellhofen. Until 1809 all four places of the former community Großbellhofen were separate communities and until 1818 they were affiliated to the district tax community Germersberg . From 1818 they formed their own political municipality with Untersdorf, Weigensdorf and Röhrischhof with the name and seat Großbellhofen .

In school terms, the four places belonged to Kirchröttenbach until a separate school was built in Großbellhofen on December 1, 1901. As part of the territorial reform in 1971, the municipality with the four places came to the market Schnaittach. Every year on the last weekend in July, a parish fair is held in Großbellhofen, which is planned by the village youth.
