The village of Freiröttenbach is a district of the Middle Franconian market Schnaittach in the district of Nürnberger Land .

The village is located in the valley of the eponymous brook Röttenbach , around five kilometers northwest of Schnaittach and 23 kilometers from Nuremberg . The Röttenbach rises north of the village and flows south via Großbellhofen into the Pegnitz . Freiröttenbach has a predominantly rural character. Neighboring towns are Schäferhütte , Lillinghof , St. Martin , Röhrischhof , Germersberg , Kirchröttenbach , Illhof and Oedhof .

In the past, Freiröttenbach was usually only passed down as "Rotenbach". The first clear evidence comes from a necrology of the Bamberg Cathedral from 1313/16: "Rotenbach quod fulgariter dicitur Frienrotenbach, et est situm lucta castrum Rotenberge" (Rotenbach, which is usually called Frienrotenbach; is located next to the Rotenberge Castle. What is meant is the Alte Rotenberg ). In 1639 there were ten farms and estates, eleven Catholics and 52 Lutherans. In the following decades, in the course of the Counter Reformation in the Rothenberg rule , in which Freiröttenbach was located, the Catholic creed was restored.

The up to the municipal reform independent municipality with its districts Lillinghof and shepherd's hut was incorporated in 1971 after Schnaittach.

Municipal roads connect the place with Oberrüsselbach, St. Martin and Großbellhofen.
