Jens Christian Jensen

Jens Christian Jensen (born May 11, 1928 in Lübeck ; † April 6, 2013 in Hamburg ) was a German art historian and museum director .

Life

After graduating from the Katharineum in Lübeck , Jensen studied art history, classical archeology , German and church history in Heidelberg and Mainz from 1949 . He received his doctorate in 1954 from Walter Paatz through Master Bertram as a carver . He then worked as a volunteer at the Museum of Art and Cultural History in Lübeck. From 1958 he was first a research assistant, later curator at the Kurpfälzisches Museum in Heidelberg and from 1968 to 1970 head of the Heidelberger Kunstverein .

In 1971 he was appointed the first independent head and director of the Kunsthalle Kiel and executive chairman of the Schleswig-Holstein Art Association. In 1990 Jensen retired.

From 1972 to 2005 Jensen was a member of the scientific advisory board of the Georg Schäfer Collection in Schweinfurt. In 1979 he was awarded the honorary professorship of the State of Schleswig-Holstein “in recognition of his services to the activation of art life in Schleswig-Holstein and in recognition of his scientific achievements in the service of art” . Jensen was the author of numerous works on medieval sculpture, painting and drawing of the 19th and 20th centuries, and contemporary art. In 2008 he was curator of the exhibition Carl Spitzweg and Wilhelm Busch. Two artist anniversaries in the Wilhelm Busch Museum in Hanover.

Jensen was awarded a knight of the Danish Dannebrogorden . He was a member of the Det Kongelige Norske Videnskabers Selskab in Trondheim . He received an honorary doctorate. In 1991 he was honored with the culture prize of the city of Kiel .

Jens Christian Jensen was with Heidi Jensen, geb. Ruesch married, they had four children together, the marriage was divorced in 1973. In 1976 he married Angelika Jensen, b. Forwick, the couple lived in Hamburg .
