Battle of Sedemuender
The battle of Sedemünder was a military conflict between the episcopal army of Minden Bishop Wedekind and a Hamelin civil army. It took place on July 28, 1260, according to some sources on July 28, 1259, near the later deserted village of Sedemünder south of the Deisterpforte in today's Lower Saxony . The battle ended with the crushing defeat of the civil army, whose surviving members were taken prisoner in Minden . The number of participants and possible losses are not known.
The reason for the dispute, which is known as the Minden feud , was a purchase contract signed in 1259 , with which the Abbot of Fulda transferred the sovereignty over the city and monastery of Hameln to the Bishop of Minden for 500 silver marks . As a result, the citizens of Hameln saw the city's independence threatened and rebelled against it with military means.
After the battle, the Brunswick-Lüneburg dukes Albrecht I and Johann I reached a settlement in autumn 1260, through which Hameln was able to break away from the dominance of the Minden bishop. He ceded half of his rights to the two dukes. In 1277 Albrecht I confirmed the citizens of Hamelin their privileges . He was anxious to extend his sphere of influence up to the Weser and made Hameln a Guelph country town with around 2000 inhabitants. This made the place one of the four large cities of the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg .
A memorial stone erected by the Heimatbund Springe at the deserted site of the village of Sedemünder, which was probably abandoned in the 15th century, commemorates the battle .
