Assault by the IS

The battle began with an offensive by the IS militia, which lasted from August 1st to 4th, 2014 and ended with the capture of Zumar . On August 1, 2014, the extremists of the Islamic State launched their offensive and attacked positions of the Kurdish Peshmerga around the city. In a first counter-offensive by the Kurdish armed forces stationed there, the Kurds were able to repel the attackers, but had to surrender and withdraw just three days later, after the population could be evacuated.

Great counter-offensive by the Peshmerga

The Peshmerga were able to penetrate the city in a large-scale counter-offensive at the end of August and defeat the occupiers. The operation lasted from August 31 to September 2, 2014 and ended with the liberation of the core city. In the meantime the place was fiercely contested again. According to the statements of an intelligence officer, Kurdish forces succeeded in regaining control of the city and surrounding villages on the morning of October 25. At the same time, Yazidi civilians and vigilante groups were trapped in Jebel Sinjar , about 50 km southwest of Zumar.

Air strikes

On the morning of September 19, the French air force launched its first attacks against targets of the terrorist organization Islamic State. The attacks were flown on and around the town of Zumar, including a supply base for the IS militia that was completely destroyed. The Rafale fighter jets took off from the Al-Dhafra base near Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates .
