Sarai Banjara railway accident

In the railway accident in Sarai Banjara went on 2 December 2000 between the stations Sarai Banjara and Sadhugarh in the Indian state of Punjab , a passenger in a derailed freight train . 46 people died in the accident .

Starting position

The Howrah-Amritsar Mail express train , No. 3005, was on the double-track route from Howrah to Amritsar . There was an order to check the tracks for cracks using ultrasound . However, the corresponding device was not available. In the opposite direction to Howrah-Amritsar Mail , a heavy freight train ran. There was heavy morning fog .

the accident

Around 5:30 a.m., the freight train derailed due to a broken rail between Sarai Banjara and Sadhugarh stations without anyone being injured. However, some of his freight wagons also got into the normal light space of the track in the opposite direction. The engine driver left the train to walk to the nearest station, Sarai Banjara, and to report the danger. Before he reached the station, however, the Howrah-Amritsar Mail drove at cruising speed into the derailed freight cars that were lying on its route. Due to the fog, the driver of the Howrah-Amritsar Mail saw the derailed freight cars very late.

consequences

46 people died and at least 150 others were injured. The lack of maintenance of the railway infrastructure and the fact that there was no more efficient communication system for emergencies were criticized . This was the 253rd Indian Railways accident .

The Indian Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the scene of the accident and spontaneously said that there might be an attack on the railway. But that was immediately seen as a diversionary maneuver for those responsible for the inadequate maintenance of the Indian railway infrastructure .
